Spreading Holiday Cheer to Senior Resources of Guilford

senior resources guilford ctyDuring December, the time of year for giving back to our community, the Senior Resources of Guilford hosted a Jingle Bell Ball event for caregivers.

Debra Stokes, Program Coordinator, sent us this response after the event:

“The Jingle Bell Ball for Grandparent/Kinship Caregivers was a huge success thanks to all of the donations from the community. The caregivers loved the pork shoulder so I am putting you on notice for December 2014. I can’t begin to tell you how well the barbeque went over I was so pleased that they loved it so much.

We call it the Jingle Bell Ball because we focus on families that do not get to go to the ball and celebrate like other families; the children really had a great time, this event made life so much easier just for a moment for the caregivers in our support group. We served 200 children and their caregivers at this event. We provided lunch for everyone, gifts for the caregivers and toys for the children. Santa was there and a host of other activities for the day.

Again thanks for your support of Senior Resources of Guilford and the kinship caregivers that are in our program.”

Supporting the Red Cross’ Blood Drive with a Tasty Treat

Red Cross Blood Drive Sponsored by SCNBOn January 7th, the local Red Cross chapter held a blood drive at the Highway Patrol and Emergency Management (NCNG). Smithfield’s Chicken ‘N Bar-B-Q supported the event by providing lunch to the donors.  Our Morrisville NC location was honored to work with the staff at the local Red Cross chapter.

“Thank you so much for your support and generous donation. Everyone was thrilled to have such a treat,” said Dallas Ellington, Red Cross Representative.

It was a successful event with 50 donors and 41 units of blood collected.  Did you know that one pint of blood saves three lives?

Giving blood that impacts lives of those in need is a powerful way to support your community.

We are grateful to serve.

ACC PickOff Donation Went to Interact of Wake County

Interact of Wake County Holiday BazaarEvery week during football season, ten bloggers from www.realtailgate.com along with two guests, picked five ACC games. Each correct game was worth a point. We kept track of the standings throughout the year and the winning blogger at the end of the year won the opportunity to donate a 30-person party pack to non-profit of his or her choice.

With a stirring comeback, Lauren Brownlow came from behind to finish in a tie with Patrick Johnson atop the leaderboard after fourteen weeks, and won by virtue of the tiebreaker. An incredible performance down the stretch!

Lauren’s charity of choice was Interact of Wake County.

“Help Our Holiday” Blood Drive

Blood DonorWith the holiday season comes the exchange of gifts among families and friends. In less time than it takes to wrap a few holiday presents, bake a batch of Christmas cookies or sing a few carols, you can give the gift of life…blood… and save lives. The blood supply often drops during the hustle and bustle of the season but the need remains constant. The blood supply proves to be challenging; in constant need of replenishment. On any given day, blood transfusions are needed for accident victims, patients in surgery, organ transplants and patients receiving treatment for leukemia, cancer or other diseases. Unfortunately, the need for blood never takes a holiday.

Rex Blood Services is hosting their annual “Help Our Holiday” blood drive today (Friday Dec 20th) from 8:30-4:30 at the Rex Blood Services Donor Center, 2709 Blue Ridge Road Raleigh. Stop by and give blood. Help us save lives through blood donation.

Smithfield’s Chicken ‘N Bar-B-Q is adding our own incentive to encourage giving today. Take a “selfie” photo of you at Rex Blood Services, email to us at contest@scnbnc.com with your name and address. We will send you a t-shirt and a $10 gift card, so include your t-shirt size and color.

Donors are our heroes and through your help, we ALL can have a hand in passing on this lifesaving gift that many patients so desperately need. There is no substitute for human blood. Thank you

American Red Cross Typhoon Fundraiser Supported by Smithfield’s Chicken ‘N Bar-B-Q

On December 7th, 2013 at the Harrington Grove Swim Club, a Holiday Fundraiser Event was held to benefit the Philippine Red Cross Typhoon Appeal. Live music, delicious food, and a great auction helped to raise close to $5,000.

Mark Armstrong, lead sports anchor on WTVD, and wife Mae delivered all donations to the local office for the American Red Cross this week.

You can still help by donating directly to the American Red Cross.

Smithfield’s Chicken ‘N Bar-B-Q donated food for the event along with a gift basket and a 20 person Party Pack for the silent auction.

We’d like to congratulate Tisha Powell from ABC 11 News who won the Smithfield Chicken ‘N Bar-B-Q Gift Basket, and Mr. & Mrs. Gillies as the winners of the Smithfield Chicken ‘N Bar-B-Q 20 Person Pack Party.

The RealTailgate.com ACC Pick-Off Champion: Lauren Brownlow!

Every week, our 10 writers, along with two guests, picked five ACC games (the best conference in the world, after all the others) against the spread. Each correct game was worth a point, and we kept track of the standings throughout the year to determine who had the sharpest mind for the game. Smithfield’s Chicken ‘N Bar-B-Que has generously agreed to support us, and the winning writer at the end of the year will win the opportunity to donate a 30-person party pack to non-profit of his or her choice. Serving our community on #GivingTuesday

Wake Leadership Academy 2013It was an honor to serve as a judge at the Service Project Presentation for the Wake Young Men's Leadership Academy on December 3, 2013. Six teams worked hard studying community issues to develop projects that will impact causes they personally care about. The winning team presented “Project Creativity,” a project that brought art to an elementary school without an art program due to budget cuts. The team was awarded a $275 grant from Activate Good to see their project come to life. As a company we are grateful to serve our customers and those who serve our communities. The entrepreneurial spirit runs deep in our organization and seeing these young men channel that spirit to serve the community was truly inspiring. -Richard Averitte, Vice-President of Operations

Partnering with Me Fine Foundation to Serve Community

Thanksgiving is a time of friends and family gathering together to give thanks for all the many blessings in our lives. Thanksgiving is steeped in traditions such as the sharing of a special meal. There are some of us who are thankful for our family, our health, and our jobs. Not every family is giving thanks to good health or to a good job today. Danielle loxtonThe Holidays are also a time for those of us who can give to help others in need. Individuals and businesses are grateful to be able to give back to our community. At Smithfield’s Chicken ‘N Bar-B-Q we are giving back to a family in need today by providing a full dinner for eight. Joey Powell, executive director of Me Fine Foundation asked if we could support a particular family for Thanksgiving. Our Smithfield North Carolina location will deliver a special Thanksgiving dinner with all the sides. As we each sit down to dinner today, remember those who aren’t as fortunate on this day of giving thanks. The mission of Me Fine Foundation is to voluntarily provide necessary resources and financial assistance to parents and caregivers with children being treated at Duke and UNC Children’s Hospitals regardless of race, diagnosis, religious affiliation or economic status. Me Fine was founded in order to pool resources for families facing life changing challenges. No one can change what these children are forced to endure medically, but our combined efforts can certainly change the financial burdens of their caregivers and make their countless days in the hospital a little easier to endure. Although the Foundation has grown significantly over the past few years, Me Fine continues to be operated by the initial members and has made a significant difference for many families enduring the same hardships and struggles. If you would like to help the Me Fine Foundation during the holidays, please contact Joey Powell, jpowell@mefinefoundation.org, 919-202-0086. l_me-fine-logo
