Spreading Holiday Cheer to Senior Resources of Guilford

senior resources guilford ctyDuring December, the time of year for giving back to our community, the Senior Resources of Guilford hosted a Jingle Bell Ball event for caregivers.

Debra Stokes, Program Coordinator, sent us this response after the event:

“The Jingle Bell Ball for Grandparent/Kinship Caregivers was a huge success thanks to all of the donations from the community. The caregivers loved the pork shoulder so I am putting you on notice for December 2014. I can’t begin to tell you how well the barbeque went over I was so pleased that they loved it so much.

We call it the Jingle Bell Ball because we focus on families that do not get to go to the ball and celebrate like other families; the children really had a great time, this event made life so much easier just for a moment for the caregivers in our support group. We served 200 children and their caregivers at this event. We provided lunch for everyone, gifts for the caregivers and toys for the children. Santa was there and a host of other activities for the day.

Again thanks for your support of Senior Resources of Guilford and the kinship caregivers that are in our program.”

ACC PickOff Donation Went to Interact of Wake County

Interact of Wake County Holiday BazaarEvery week during football season, ten bloggers from www.realtailgate.com along with two guests, picked five ACC games. Each correct game was worth a point. We kept track of the standings throughout the year and the winning blogger at the end of the year won the opportunity to donate a 30-person party pack to non-profit of his or her choice.

With a stirring comeback, Lauren Brownlow came from behind to finish in a tie with Patrick Johnson atop the leaderboard after fourteen weeks, and won by virtue of the tiebreaker. An incredible performance down the stretch!

Lauren’s charity of choice was Interact of Wake County.

The RealTailgate.com ACC Pick-Off Champion: Lauren Brownlow!

Every week, our 10 writers, along with two guests, picked five ACC games (the best conference in the world, after all the others) against the spread. Each correct game was worth a point, and we kept track of the standings throughout the year to determine who had the sharpest mind for the game. Serving our community on #GivingTuesday

Wake Leadership Academy 2013It was an honor to serve as a judge at the Service Project Presentation for the Wake Young Men's Leadership Academy on December 3, 2013. Six teams worked hard studying community issues to develop projects that will impact causes they personally care about. The winning team presented “Project Creativity,” a project that brought art to an elementary school without an art program due to budget cuts. The team was awarded a $275 grant from Activate Good to see their project come to life. As a company we are grateful to serve our customers and those who serve our communities. The entrepreneurial spirit runs deep in our organization and seeing these young men channel that spirit to serve the community was truly inspiring. -Richard Averitte, Vice-President of Operations

Partnering with Me Fine Foundation to Serve Community

Thanksgiving is a time of friends and family gathering together to give thanks for all the many blessings in our lives. Thanksgiving is steeped in traditions such as the sharing of a special meal. There are some of us who are thankful for our family, our health, and our jobs. Not every family is giving thanks to good health or to a good job today. Danielle loxtonThe Holidays are also a time for those of us who can give to help others in need. Individuals and businesses are grateful to be able to give back to our community. At Smithfield’s Chicken ‘N Bar-B-Q we are giving back to a family in need today by providing a full dinner for eight. Joey Powell, executive director of Me Fine Foundation asked if we could support a particular family for Thanksgiving. Our Smithfield North Carolina location will deliver a special Thanksgiving dinner with all the sides. As we each sit down to dinner today, remember those who aren’t as fortunate on this day of giving thanks. The mission of Me Fine Foundation is to voluntarily provide necessary resources and financial assistance to parents and caregivers with children being treated at Duke and UNC Children’s Hospitals regardless of race, diagnosis, religious affiliation or economic status. Me Fine was founded in order to pool resources for families facing life changing challenges. No one can change what these children are forced to endure medically, but our combined efforts can certainly change the financial burdens of their caregivers and make their countless days in the hospital a little easier to endure. Although the Foundation has grown significantly over the past few years, Me Fine continues to be operated by the initial members and has made a significant difference for many families enduring the same hardships and struggles. If you would like to help the Me Fine Foundation during the holidays, please contact Joey Powell, jpowell@mefinefoundation.org, 919-202-0086. l_me-fine-logo

Grateful to Serve Those Who Have Served – Our Veterans

Grateful to Serve Our Veterans

Grateful to Serve Our Veterans

What brought motorcycle riders, bagpipers, senators, Miss North Carolina, golfers, and Smithfield’s together? More than 280 people tee’ed-off during the 5th annual Tee-Off for the Troops Golf Classic on Tuesday, November 11, 2014 at the Bentwinds Country Club in Fuquay-Varina, NC. Held in recognition of Veterans Day, the golf classic strives to recognize and honor veterans, and to raise funds that enable Military Missions in Action (MMIA) to complete its projects and programs that support veterans with disabilities as well as active-duty veterans. It does this more successfully every year. Grateful to support this cause, the Morrisville, NC location of Smithfield's Chicken ‘N Bar-B-Q®/SCNB Chicken ‘N Bar-B-Q® donated 180 lunches for this captain’s choice event that is so much more than a golf tournament. Tournament play opened each day with a meaningful ceremony. The two-day event included senatorial keynote speakers, the Legion Motorcycle Riders, pageant queens, and a local TV weather personality. During an emotional Fallen Soldier Ceremony on day two, a U.S. Army Color Guard and Rifle Team posted the colors and gave a 21 gun salute. The event is growing through the desire of MMIA, its volunteers, sponsors, and participants to assist disabled veterans. Next year may just be bigger, so don’t miss out. Supporting our newest community, Greensboro North Carolina

IMAG1244 Recently Smithfield's Chicken 'N Bar-B-Q was asked to provide lunch to a firefighter's meeting in Greensboro. We are grateful to serve and show our support to volunteers in our newest location's community.

On behalf of the firefighters and myself, I would like to express our sincere appreciation for the donation of Smithfield's food for the firefighter's monthly business meeting. It was a welcome change from having to prepare the meal themselves and in usual Smithfield's fashion, it was all delicious! Thank you again for your generosity!
Sincerely, Steve Allred Fire Chief

Smithfield’s Chicken ‘N Bar-B-Q is offering a little friendly competition to two North Carolina universities and benefiting a local non-profit. Last year we had a #FeedtheRivalry competition between NC State and UNC during their football game. The winner was UNC. UNC student body president, Will Leimenstoll, got to choose which non-profit would receive Smithfield’s Chicken ‘N Bar-B-Q 50 person party pack. His choice was Community Empowerment Fund (CEF), a student group that gives micro loans and assistance to homeless people and other disadvantaged members of the Chapel Hill community.

Depending on the university that wins this Saturday’s football game, Smithfield’s Chicken ‘N Bar-B-Q will donate a 50 person party pack to a non-profit of the student body president’s choice. Student body presidents are Christy Lambden @christyUNC for UNC and Alex Parker @alexjonesparker for NCSU. The winning university’s student body president will decide how the 50 person party pack will be used. The party pack can be used at any time and in any capacity. It can feed people served by the non-profit, the volunteers of the non-profit, or perhaps as food for a fundraiser for the non-profit. The 50 person party pack includes:
  • Bar-B-Q
  • Chicken
  • Cole slaw
  • Potato salad
  • Hushpuppies
  • Sweet Tea
  • Ice and paper products
Smithfield’s Chicken ‘N Bar-B-Q will also deliver the meal to the non-profit chosen. Follow the #feedtherivalry on Twitter @scnbnc. You can get in on the action by helping us get the hashtag #feedtherivalry to trend. Simply tweet or re-tweet about this friendly competition all during the game. Make sure to follow along because there might be a special treat mentioned too. Good luck and may the best team win!
