Smithfield’s Chicken ‘N Bar-B-Q in San Francisco?

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

Actually, no and yes.  We don’t plan on building a location there anytime soon, but we can ship bar-b-q to California!  We would like to thank superfan Karen Zachary of Oakland, CA  for sending us this great photo of her holding one of our shipping boxes in front of  the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. While we have not expanded outside of North Carolina, you can order our signature bar-b-q online and have it shipped to you anywhere in the United States. Just visit our online store and find out how you can order bar-b-q, Brunswick stew and other sides online!

Being a customer advocate

It drives me crazy when I go to a restaurant and the cashier or server does not have a good understanding of the menu. It irks me when they have to look for a cheat sheet or ask another co-worker/manager. At Smithfield’s Chicken ‘N Bar-B-Q, we make sure all our co-workers know the menu so they can better serve our customers by being customer advocates. We want to empower our co-workers so they make decisions in our customer’s best interest.

Here’s an example: We offer a Value Pack on our menu- a Bar-B-Q sandwich, fries and a drink. If the customer orders a Bar-B-Q sandwich, hushpuppies and a drink, we could easily charge them for exactly what they asked for and ring up each item separately. Instead, we train our co-workers to do what is best for our customers and therefore suggest the following: “We have a Value Pack-sandwich, FF and drink. How about I ring you up for that and substitute the hushpuppies for fries? That will save you a little money!”

Sure, we technically lost money on that transaction but our philosophy is we gained goodwill with that customer. We believe that investment of goodwill is going to yield a better return than any single transaction. We want to give our customers the best possible deal so they will visit us again. Notice how we explain  how we ring up the order. We want to “train” our customers so they know what to ask for again next time.

Being a customer advocate is critical , particularly in this current economic climate. Our company’s success is due to that fact that everything is done in the best interest of our customers. A new menu item or an advertising campaign can never replace a team of customer advocates!

Coupons Don’t Create Business

Wednesday, June 10th, 2009

Occasionally you may see some Smithfield’s Chicken ‘N Bar-B-Q coupons in your local paper or in a coupon mailer. We also send them via e-mail and soon you will have the luxury of having coupons sent to you via text message.  These coupons are meant to entice customers to come see us if it’s been a while or invite someone who has never dined with us. However, we do understand that coupons do not create business but rather gives us an opportunity to create business. Coupons may bring customers to the front doors of our restaurants , but it’s up to the store to create the business.  This means providing great food and service in a clean restaurant every time.  The last thing we want to do is invite a bad experience.  We look to embrace these opportunities and create a memorable experience!

We also love to hear feedback whether it good, bad or indifferent. Feedback allow us to give positive reinforcement to our stores or allow us to make corrections. We can’t get better if don’t hear from you! Please send your experiences or thoughts here and thank you for your business!
