Smithfield’s Chicken ‘N Bar-B-Q Partners with SAFEchild

Friday, December 11th, 2009

Smithfield’s Chicken ‘N Bar-B-Q is happy to announce that they have continued, and extended, their community relations and support with yet another non-profit partnership from the communities in which they serve. The family-oriented restaurant group will be providing SAFEchild, a Raleigh-NC based organization, with a meal for their PLUS program graduation ceremonies, as well as, a monthly meal for the Crianza Con Carino program.

Both of these programs continue the goals of SAFEchild in working with parents, families, and caregivers to create nurturing environments for children, free from abuse and neglect. The Parents Learning, Understanding, Sharing (PLUS) program uses children’s literature to encourage cooperation and helps families develop good communication skills and manage stress and anger during a 12-week program. The Crianza Con Carino program is a 12 to 24-week family education program that blends child-rearing information with social supports to strengthen Spanish-speaking families living in Wake County.

“A 14% reduction to this year’s budget affected SAFEchild’s ability to provide the types of nutritious meals we like to for the families in our group programs. Thanks to the generosity of community partners like Smithfield’s Chicken ’N Bar-B-Q, we are able to offer our families the opportunity to sit down together for a good meal before their group session begins”, said Marjorie Menestres, Executive Director at SAFEchild.

“SAFEchild is thrilled to have been chosen as a community partner by Smithfield Chicken ‘N Bar-B-Q. SAFEchild has been committed to eliminating child abuse in Wake County by helping adults and children create nurturing environments free from abuse and neglect since 1992”, added Menestres.

“Smithfield’s Chicken ‘N Bar-B-Q is a family-owned company that embraces the importance and value of family in our communities,” says Richard Averitte, Marketing Director for Smithfield’s Chicken ‘N Bar-B-Q. “The programs that SAFEchild has created in our area are helping to improve the lives of so many. We are truly honored to have the opportunity to help support them and the families they are serving.”

Smithfield’s Chicken ‘N Bar-B-Q Launches Bar-B-Q Shipping Website

Thursday, October 8th, 2009

It was the occasional out-of-state inquiry that caused Smithfield’s Chicken ‘N Bar-B-Q to begin shipping their signature Eastern style Bar-B-Q and sides. Turns out, traveling Eastern N.C. Bar-B-Q has been a bright spot in this sour economy. Richard Averitte, marketing director for Smithfield’s Chicken ‘N Bar-B-Q, posted the news on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. He also included how it’s exactly done: vacuum-sealed fresh and packed in an insulated cooler with ice packs. What came next was surprising. The social networking sites yielded more online requests and interest than the company ever expected.

Will Gibson, a Kinston, NC native living in Seattle, ordered fifty pounds of Bar-B-Q for his wedding reception. A request even came from as far away as Afghanistan, when U.S. Navy operations specialist first class James Franks found Smithfield’s Facebook page. Smithfield’s Chicken ‘N Bar-B-Q hasn’t figured out how to ship Bar-B-Q that far; currently shipping is available to anyone in the continental U.S. Not wanting to disappoint, Averitte sent Franks two cases of hushpuppy mix instead. Smithfield’s Chicken ‘N Bar-B-Q has now shipped Bar-B-Q to all fifty states and is bracing for the holiday season.

The new revenue stream prompted Smithfield’s Chicken ‘N Bar-B-Q to launch a website dedicated entirely to shipping: weshipbarbq.com. “We have just been flooded with requests and questions; the website has helped tremendously,” says Averitte. “It’s been a wonderful way to diversify our business and give a little taste of North Carolina to those who can’t order it in person.”

Smithfield’s Chicken ‘N Bar-B-Q has a 40-year history serving the finest fried chicken and Eastern-North-Carolina-style Bar-B-Q, made fresh daily from family recipes and served in a family-friendly atmosphere. Smithfield’s Chicken ‘N Bar-B-Q has over 30 locations in North Carolina as well as an online store where BBQ can be shipped anywhere in the United States.

Facebook And Snail Mail Make Good Bed Fellows

Thursday, August 20th, 2009

Facebook and Snail Mail—a great combo for local restaurant

Cary, NC—Although Facebook and Snail Mail seem unlikely bed fellows, the combination has proved interesting for North Carolina based Smithfield’s Chicken ‘N Bar-B-Q. Take Will Gibson, a native of Kinston, NC. Now living in Seattle, Washington, Gibson found Smithfield’s Chicken ‘N Bar-B-Q on Facebook and signed up as a fan. Soon after, Gibson brought his fiancé, Scarlett, back home for a visit, and they feasted on Eastern-style bar-b-q the entire week.

After that, Scarlett was hooked too. “When we sat down to plan our wedding, it was her idea to try and replicate as much of that food as we could for our reception dinner, with bar-b-q at the top of the list,” says Gibson. Smithfield’s Chicken ‘N Bar-B-Q obliged via the US Postal Service by shipping 50 pounds of bar-b-q (Gibson admits it may be only 48 pounds by the time the big day arrived), which was vacuum-packed and stored in the freezer until the reception dinner.

Facebook was also the catalyst that brought a soldier a little taste of home. U.S. Navy operations specialist first class James Franks, a Smithfield native currently serving in Afghanistan, found Smithfield’s Chicken ‘N Bar-B-Q’s Facebook page as well. “I posted to make a joke that if they wanted to attempt to send some barbeque to Afghanistan, I would gladly be their guinea pig.”

Bar-b-q wouldn’t make it, but two cases of hush puppy mix would—and did.  “On Memorial Day we had a little over 100 people attend our cook-out,” wrote Franks. “Once the word got out about the hush puppies, I literally could not make them fast enough.”

In just six months of offering nationwide shipping, Smithfield’s Chicken ‘N Bar-B-Q has shipped bar-b-q to all fifty states. What started as an idea that would be implemented on an occasional basis is now a full-blown enterprise for Smithfield’s Chicken ‘N Bar-B-Q, as well as a good example of how local businesses are combining social networking sites with conventional practices to increase business.  They are currently blending social and traditional media for their fall promotion, “It’s Just Not A Tailgate Without The Bar-B-Q!” The campaign is centered on a micro-site, www.realtailgate.com, where the company can interact with their customers in a number of ways.

Smithfield’s Chicken ‘N Bar-B-Q has a 40-year history serving the finest fried chicken and Eastern-North-Carolina-style Bar-B-Q, made fresh daily from family recipes and served home style in a family-friendly atmosphere. Smithfield’s Chicken ‘N Bar-B-Q has over 30 locations in North Carolina as well as an online store where Bar-B-Q can be shipped anywhere in the United States.
