Smithfield’s Chicken ‘N Bar-B-Q® Continues Tradition of Support for Local St. Baldrick’s Fundraising Efforts with Eastern North Carolina Bar-B-Q and Tweets

Tuesday, May 21st, 2013

Even as participation grows to never matched before participants, Smithfield’s Chicken ‘N Bar-B-Q® cooks up creative ways to continue supporting worthy local endeavors with eastern NC flavor and a healthy dose of social media savvy

(Cary, NC) – Smithfield’s Chicken ‘N Bar-B-Q® (SCNB) is once again humbled to celebrate the success of the fundraising chapter of the St. Baldrick’s Foundation known as “The Bald Entrepreneurs” – a group of small business owners and community leaders based in Wake Forest, NC. “The Factory” event location, which annually hosts willing “shavees” and fundraisers who are willing to go bald in support of the non-profit foundation cited as being the “world’s largest private funder of childhood cancer research grants”, takes place at a former northern Wake County commercial manufacturing property that has been renovated to house restaurants, a YMCA location, retail and local recreational facilities.

The restaurant-community partnership started small several years ago with Smithfield’s Chicken ‘N Bar-B-Q® providing donated signature menu items (eastern NC bar-b-q, fried chicken, hush puppies, sides and sweet tea) for the after-party, but has since grown to feature “fundraising boxes” created by the restaurant brand, that allow “The Bald Entrepreneurs” to feed hungry guests while continuing their fundraising efforts throughout the day of shaving.

Fundraising support didn’t end this year with simply feeding fundraisers, either. The support continued across geographic boundaries and was practically limitless when @SCNBNC took to Twitter to continue support for the cause – @SCNBNC Twitter followers were asked to tweet “#BBQbeatscancer” while the restaurant brand promised to donate $1.00 for every tweet of support posted. Almost a week after the first “tweet of support” was posted, Smithfield’s Chicken ‘N Bar-B-Q® Marketing Director Richard Averitte says that he was still counting tweets in response.

Even prior to #BBQbeatscancer’s final total of tweets could be calculated, the The Factory St. Baldrick’s group estimated participation and fundraising in excess of “335 shavees and over $123,000.00 in fundraising”, according to Carol R. Wessler, Accounting Director for Charleston Management Corp., who volunteered to help organize the fundraising group’s efforts. “We had a great turn out and the day was filled with anticipation, excitement and sometimes tears!” added Wessler.

“When we have the opportunity to partner with community groups that excel at accomplishing their charitable goals, we are proud to be able to continue that support as these groups grow and flourish”, explains Richard Averitte, Marketing Director of Smithfield’s Chicken ‘N Bar-B-Q®. “As an individual brand, we’d be hard-pressed to engage the kind of support and dedication that groups like this are able to cultivate in their own backyards, which are in the communities we’re grateful to serve with our locations”, he adds.

2013 Triangle Media Ryder Cup pits Team Internet against Team Traditional Media

Thursday, May 16th, 2013

June 1st is the return of the Triangle Media Ryder Cup featuring Team Internet and Team Traditional.

The battle lines have been drawn. On one side, the upstart bloggers, podcasters, and online renegades of Team Internet. On the other, the stalwart newspaper, radio, and tv men of Team Traditional. For the second straight year, these rival factions will be meeting in the Triangle Media Ryder Cup! Team Traditional won the Cup last year (check out the results here), and now Team Internet is out for revenge.

Last year Shane Ryan and Ben Swain decided to start an annual Triangle Ryder Media Cup Golf Tournament to benefit a charity, The Communities in Schools Charity supporting Durham County Schools.

This year, Smithfield’s Chicken ‘N Bar-B-Q is sponsoring the golf tournament and the charity will remain the Communities in Schools supporting both Wake County and Durham County Schools.

Two teams of ten will go head to head for a chance to be named 2013 Ryder Cup Champs in this charity golf tournament.

You can follow the action on Twitter @MediaRyderCup.

Last year, $662.34 was raised for Durham Community in Schools program. This year, we’ll be splitting the donations between CIS-Durham and CIS-Wake and expect to exceed $3,000 in donations.

We are grateful to support the educational community in which we serve.  Help us reach our fundraising goal by donating as little as $10.  To learn more about the charity, click here.  If you value education, any amount donated is very much appreciated.

Any Controversy Brewing?

Well, maybe just a little rivalry but wouldn’t that just make it more interesting?   We’d love to have you out on the course to watch! Again, we play on Friday, June 1, starting at 9:30 am. We estimate that the final round will finish between 4 and 5 pm. And even if you can’t, we appreciate any support you can give through Communities in Schools. Every little bit helps!

InterAct is a private, non-profit, United Way Agency that provides safety, support, and awareness to victims and survivors of domestic and sexual violence. While we have full-time and part-time staff members, support from our volunteers allows us to fulfill our mission. InterAct has about 200 trained and active volunteers who provide two 24-hour crisis lines, individual and group counseling,  court advocacy, hospital response for rape victims, community education and professional training programs and a full violence prevention curriculum to 3–12 grade students in Wake County schools. InterAct volunteers provided over 39,000 hours of service in 2012! On Saturday, April 6th, InterAct honored our dedicated volunteers with a Volunteer Appreciation Picnic. We ate, played games, distributed awards to outstanding volunteers, and enjoyed music from the String Peddlers.

InterAct is also always looking for new volunteers! You can get started by attending one of our volunteer information sessions, which are held the third Wednesday of every month. Visit interactofwake.org/volunteer for a list of the dates more information about volunteer opportunities.

Smithfield’s Chicken ‘N Bar-B-Q® Joins ACCSports.com and 99.9 The Fan Footprint Podcasts for Local Talk About Brackets, Baseball and Bar-B-Q

Tuesday, March 26th, 2013

Weekly and bi-weekly podcasts feature industry experts and insiders recap conference headlines and actions on ACCSports.com;  99.9 The Fan’s Joe Ovies and WRALSportsFan.com’s Derek Medlin on The Footprint offer free, streamable commentary on local college sports.

Smithfield’s Chicken ‘N Bar-B-Q® is fired up to announce their latest new media initiative, just in time for the peak of March Madness,  as all three Triangle-area ACC basketball teams look back on the first two rounds of the 2013 ACC Tournament this past weekend. Serving as sponsors for the “ACC Sports Journal” podcast featured on TheMesh.tv, as well as the bi-weekly, fifteen minute “The Footprint” podcast, which airs on local sports news website WRALSportsFan.com, SCNB aims to reconnect with the same local collegiate sports fans who made the fall “Real Tailgate” podcast an online success.

Recent episodes of the ACC Sports Journal podcast have included topics like All-ACC, TOB, halftime shows, a farewell to rivalries and more. Hosts Hayes Permar and Jim Young talk about men’s hoops, with random humorous commentary and eclectic music selections thrown in just for fun.

The Footprint podcast is hosted by 99.9 The Fan on-air sports radio talent Joe Ovies (described on his Twitter profile as a “provider of Triangle sports radio snark”) alongside college sports buff and WRALSportsFan.com editor Derek Medlin. The fifteen minute program is billed as an “audio stroll through headlines in the ACC with a focus on Duke, North Carolina and NC State” and so far has covered the most relevant of topics for Tobacco Road basketball junkies: teams’ tournament hopes and a preview of first round opening games.

As the Triangle’s presence in the NCAA basketball tournament dance slows, with the lone presence of Duke in the Sweet Sixteen this year, Triangle ACC fans will begin to turn their sights to baseball. Last season, NC State made a NCAA Super Regional run, losing to Florida 9-8 after 10 innings, in the Gainesville Super Regional. Hot on the heels of baseball season, the talk will turn to pigskin previews, as all three Triangle-area football programs continue to evolve: NCSU welcomes new coach Dave Doeren, UNC’s Larry Fedora aims for post-season championships and Duke’s David Cutcliff extends his commitment to staying in Durham.

The weekly ACC Sports Journal podcast is available for free online at TheMesh.tv.

The bi-weekly The Footprint podcast is available for free online at WRALSportsFan.com by searching “Footprint”.

“Last fall, we recognized a tremendous amount of support for our sponsorship of the ‘Real Tailgate’ podcast which we produced with TheMesh.tv and it gave us a taste of just how loyal our bar-b-q faithfuls are to following the latest headlines and discussion of their favorite local teams”, explains Richard Averitte, Marketing Director of Smithfield’s Chicken ‘N Bar-B-Q®. “We know that excitement escalates to a fever pitch come basketball season in North Carolina, so we set out to expand our sponsorships of that same kind of content with Capitol Broadcasting Company and Curtis Media’s sports properties, as well. It made perfect sense for us – bar-b-q and basketball are two things North Carolina is known for being great at”, he adds.
